'Pose to pose' or 'St. ahead'?

Well, I used to do do st. ahead first. And believe me guys it was really creative. I did the 'B for Ball'(a 50sec animation) entirely st. ahead. But it took really long time. And I got all the actions he would do clearly on my mind. So it was not a big prob. But as soon a same scene came on exams, I couldn't finish it though I knew the action perfectly. Cause I was out of time after about 80 frames. And it needed over 150 frames. So from the next day i went pose to pose, like walk cycle or lip sync kinda shots. It was a good method almost like 2d classical animation. But I really had or rather say have a prob doing a progressive walk in pose to pose.

I mean, suppose I have an animation where a man comes walking a little and then rings a doorbell. Pose to pose says I should do two poses 1st.

1st pose: The man coming, 2nd pose: He is standing at the door and ringing the bell.

Thats good. But the prob happens with me is that I cant match the two poses by the breakdown pose. So after completing the animation it looks like the man coming with a small step suddenly takes a big step and then rings the bell. Some would say I should break the middle step by two step as he is coming with small steps. But may be the middle place doesn't have enough space for two half cycle. So that wont be useful. Then what should i do?? I mean I cant make the last pose not looking at the invisible steps he is taking! Thats too tough for me.

Then I watched some tutorials following a great process: A hi-bread of pose to pose and st. ahead action: Doing poses after every 4 or 10 frames(almost like st. ahead) and after the rough animation is over then adjusting the timing with dope sheet or manually and after the main animation is done doing the palms in 1 pass the the hair in another pass... And thats really a cool process for Animation. I now try to follow this great process.

So if the same scene comes I will at 1st do the coming pose. then the next step he is taking (maintaining the gap between every step) then the next step (if he needs it). and then standing in front of the door and then ringing the bell. So its just like the real life action. Like if you are doing the same action you wont decide at 1st that how many steps do you have to take to ring the bell. You will just go in front of the door and then adjust your steps at the last moment by watching the distance from the door. You will may be shorter your steps a bit to stand in front of the door. You just cant know which leg you have to place just in front of the door. That will just happen. So I will animate the character in that very way. Then I will break the 10 or 15 poses to give a realistic or comical movement. Then breakdown the breakdowns. Then some little tweaks in the frames and the animation is complete. Then on the next pass I will do the palms then on the next pass I will do the follow through of the hair or belly or cloth or whatever.

ps: If you are doing a small action of may be 14 or 20 frames, then you can do in pose to pose. And I think that would be rather better. Cause in this case you have to maintain the perfect timing.
